‘7 SKAUST Students Reprieved of UA(P)A Charges’

Srinagar, Dec 2:Seven students from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKAUST), booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, have been given reprieve as authorities have reportedly dropped the stringent charges against them.

“The UAPA charge against seven Kashmiri students has been dropped. All 7 students, enrolled at (SKUAST) in Ganderbal, Kashmir, were initially arrested and charged under UAPA after Australia defeated India in the World Cup on November 19”, National Convenor JK Students Association Nasir Khuehami wrote in a post on microblogging site ‘X’.

“They have now been granted bail, with Adv Shafiq Bhat serving as the counsel representing the students”, reads the post thread.

Welcoming the move, PDP Chairperson and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti wrote in a post on ‘X’; “Glad to know that UAPA charges against SKAUST students have been dropped. Finally good sense has prevailed and their future saved from jeopardy.”

Pertinent to mention here that seven students from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKAUST) in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district were arrested after India lost to Australia in World Cup final on November 19, 2023 following which the students in question ‘celebrated’ the host nation’s defeat.
