Srinagar, Nov 14: Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences organized World Diabetes Day celebrations at the SKIMS auditorium today on 14th November, 2018. The event focused on creating awareness about diabetes particularly in children. The event started with registration, blood tests and anthropometry of the patients. To stress the importance of life style modification in the management of diabetes, a physical activity session was organized. A team of doctors from Department of Psychiatry, Government Medial College, Srinagar and from Department of Endocrinology, SKIMS counseled the patients regarding psychosocial issues in diabetes. As diet management plays an important role in the management of diabetes, a session on diet counseling and “carbohydrate counting” was conducted by Dr. M. Hayat Bhat and senior dieticians of SKIMS.
The afternoon session comprised of Young Diabetes Registry (YDR) workshop which included hands on sessions on key topics in the management of diabetes. Lecture on self-monitoring of blood glucose was delivered by Dr. Shanawaz Mir, on insulin injection techniques by DrRiaz Ahmad Misgar and on foot care in diabetes by Dr. AdilHafeez. Dr. ShariqMasoodi (Principal Investigator, YDR) highlighted the current situation of diabetes in young population of Kashmir from the data of YDR. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. A. H Zargar and panelists Dr. Bashir A. Laway (Endocrinologist), Dr. M. Ashraf Gansie (Endocrinologist) Dr. Abida Ahmad (Gynecologist), Dr. Bashir Charoo (Pediatrician), Dr. Imtiyaz AS Wani (Nephrologist), Dr. Imtiyaz A Lone and Dr. Arshad Hussain (Psychiatrist) answered questions regarding the prevention and management of diabetes and its complications.
The event concluded with a valedictory function and was attended by the Director SKIMS and Ex-officio Secretary to the Government, Dr. Omar Javed Shah, who distributed special prizes to children who were winners in various activities like quiz, painting and self-management of diabetes. The Director also appreciated the speakers, the YDR investigators and all the support staff for the successful event. The children from Green valley R.P School participated in various activities of the event.
