JAMMU, MARCH 2: What could be termed as a major boost to environment conservation campaign, the state Government has constituted a State Coordination Cell for the implementation of Herbal Garden Scheme in schools and other institutions of the School Education Department.
The Herbal Garden Scheme, approved earlier by the government, provides for developing herbal gardens on the surplus land in schools to conserve and grow rare plants and herbs found in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per a government order issued by the Education Department, the State Coordination Cell would be presently positioned in Directorate of School Education. The government has also appointed a nodal officer to head the coordination cell constituted for the implementation of the scheme.
The execution and monitoring of the scheme shall be through RMSA framework, the order further reads.
The scheme aims at to serve twin purpose of sensitizing the students about conservation and use of medicinal plants as also to imbibe entrepreneur skills by involving them in the development of the herbal garden, said Minister for Education, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari.
The scheme would help the students to understand the state’s biodiversity through plants and the impending environment-related issues, like extinction of rare plants and herbs, deforestation and global warming, he said.
