Explaining the reasons for holding the function in Purana Shahr, he said that it is important that people are aware of the sacrifices and contributions that young nationalists, like Bhagat Singh, made towards the movement for Independence. The stories of his bravery and courage have inspired millions and will continue to do so for centuries. Sawhney added that he gave a new direction to the Indian freedom struggle through his revolutionary ideas and supreme sacrifice and awakened resolve of independence among the youth of the country.
Sawhney further added that the spirit of nationalism, of dedication towards the flag, and of fighting oppression can re-awakened in today’s time if the youth is made conscious of the values and principles that these admirable revolutionaries taught. Khudiram Bose, who died at the tender age of 18, the revolutionary trio of Bhagat Singh-Sukhdev-Rajguru who died smiling for the nation, Azad, Udham Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha and Dinesh Gupta, who died at 19, and other revolutionaries should be remembered as people who had the courage and determination to fight the evil British rule fearlessly through their acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. These revolutionaries should be celebrated.
Speaking on the occasion, Sawhney suggested that this can be achieved through awareness programs and activities to reinforce and instil in the youth of today the great heritage of India’s rich history of heroism. A compilation, a book showcasing the sacrifice, the life struggle, and more importantly the contributions of freedom fighters who lost their lives at very young ages should be launched and publicised to sustain their legacy and prevent it from being destroyed at the hands of false political narratives built to tarnish the Indian history. Sawhney further explained that the birthplaces of these freedom fighters should be memorialised, and student exchange programs should be organised to augment knowledge and understanding of Indian history.
