    Mumbai rains: Trains on western line suspended, disaster force on alert

    Mumbai, Aug 29: Traffic snarls, water-logging and disruption of air and rail movement have been reported in Mumbai.

    Mumbai, which saw rains bringing the city down to its knees in 2005, is set to receive heavy showers in the next 48 hours. The disaster management team and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are on alert and water logging has been reported in several parts of the city. The BMC helpline number for emergencies is 1916.Mumbai Police has also issued an alert stating that heavy water-logging is expected in the next few hours due to heavy showers and high tide. The police have advised Mumbaikars to check their route before venturing out. Due to heavy rains, trains on the western line have been suspended.

    Maharashtra government has issued orders to all offices to allow their employees to leave early in the wake of Met department’s warning on heavy rains. Following incessant rain, Milan and Andheri subways have been shut due to water-logging. Traffic snarls have been reported from Andheri, Wakola, Film City junction, Santacruz

    Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted alerts from disaster management’s office in Mumbai informing Mumbaikars that the administration is “fully geared and monitoring situation” following heavy rains in Mumbai.

    Chief Minister Fadnavis later visited the state disaster management control room to monitor its preparedness in the wake of flood-like situation in Mumbai, and other parts of the state.”I have spoken with BMC’s disaster management cell and Mumbai Police over hotline. Mantralaya staff have been told to leave early,” Devendra Fadnavis said.

    Water-logging in Dadar

    The regional meteorological centre has warned of heavy rainfall in Maharashtra for the next three days. A low pressure system over Madhya Pradesh is causing heavy rains in Mumbai and other nearby areas, the weather department said.

    “There is a low pressure system over Madhya Pradesh and it is likely to intensify in next 24 hours. This well marked low pressure system is causing heavy to very heavy rainfall over Mumbai and adjoining areas. Rains will continue over the next  24 hours,” Dr A K Srivastava, head of the climate monitoring unit, IMD Pune, told India Today.

    HERE ARE THE LATEST UPDATES ON MUMBAI RAINS:

    1. Heavy rains continue to lash parts of Mumbai and Thane with a high tide expected to hit the shores today at 4.35 pm.
    2. Mumbaikars brave heavy rain to take Ganesh idol for visarjan in Dadar.

      Heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Maharashtra, especially northern Konkan region, said K S Hosalikar, deputy director general, Met department. “Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall expected within 48 hrs, and isolated heavy rainfall expected in North Konkan,” the Met department official said. The Met department in Mumbai has also predicted very heavy rainfall in the next four hours in Mumbai, and suburbs like Alibag.

    3. Heavy rain was reported in Hindmata area of Mumbai.

      Water-logging reported in areas such as Lower Parel, Hindmata, Dadar, Elphinstone, Andheri East, Jogeshwari station, Khar West and Andheri. Traffic is moving slow on Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road and Eastern Express Highway, and near Hindmata.

    4. The traffic scenario across south-central Mumbai due to waterlogging.

      Two Mumbai-bound flights have been diverted while delays of 15-20 minutes have been reported in flight departure/arrival.

    5. The scene at KEM Hospital in Mumbai following heavy rain.

      The traffic police in Mumbai has also issued traffic alerts. Several incidents of trees falling due to heavy rain have also been reported. Traffic movement has been disrupted in Ghatkopar east, Jogeshwari due to falling of trees.

    6. Water-logged street in Andheri East

      In the last 34 hours, CST has received 268 mm rain, Colaba 218 mm, Dadar 186 mm, Ghatkopar 195 mm, Mulund 143 mm, Bandra 178 mm, Andheri 158 mm, and Borivali 146 mm.

    7. Movement of trains has been affected. The railways tracks near Bandra railway station were flooded. Similar scenes were witnessed in Matunga where railway tracks were inundated. Central line and harbour lines have been closed due to water-logging. On the western railway line, trains from Churchgate to Virar have now started moving.
    8. Three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stationed in Mumbai have been put on alert. Two additional teams of NDRF have been moved from Pune to Mumbai.

      Thanks to incessant rainfall, water has entered the wards of KEM Hospital in Mumbai. BMC has reported three incidents of wall collapse, 16 incidents of short-circuit and 23 incidents of trees or branches falling in the last 24 hours due to heavy rainfall.

    10. BMC’s advisory for the next 24 hours.

      The BMC, in a press release, has said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Mumbai in the next 24 hours. Mumbai and sururban areas recorded 70 mm rain in the last one hour and more than 100 mm rain since 8.30 am. The corporation has pressed 136 water pumps into service and also requested people to not venture out unless necessary.
