An Army jawan has been arrested from the Srinagar airport early this morning, according to multiple news reports. The jawan was arrested after security forces found two grenades in his baggage. He was reportedly to board a flight to New Delhi.
According to reports, the jawan has been posted near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, in Uri sector. Soon after the arrest, the jawan, identified as Bhupal Mukhia, was taken to the police station in central Kashmir’s Humama for interrogation.
Army sources, that the jawan hails from Darjeeling and has accepted that he was carrying grenades. While he earlier said it was to cause blasts in rivers in order to catch fish, following an interrogation he has admitted to the involvement of junior level officers, with him (jawan) being the courier. No details were officially made available.
The arrest comes a day after Prime Minister visited the state to inaugurate the Chenani underground tunnel. In an unrelated incident, a policeman was killed and at least 15 others were injured following a grenade attack in Nowhatta near Srinagar.
