Monitoring Desk,20-May; Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan today. He was welcomed by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the venue.
At the Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden greeted each other warmly and shared a hug as they met at the venue. The meeting with Biden today comes ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s official State visit to the US from the 21st to 24th of June, where he will be hosted by US President Biden at the White House.
On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of Japan, President of South Korea and Prime Minister of Vietnam. During the meeting with Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida, Modi thanked Kishida for planting in Hiroshima the Bodhi sapling that had been gifted by Prime Minister Modi in March this year.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed ways to enhance India-Japan friendship across different sectors including trade, economy and culture.
According to the External Affairs Ministry, Modi and Kishida discussed ways to synergise efforts of their respective G7 and G20 Presidencies, and the need to highlight the voice of Global South.
They also exchanged views on contemporary regional developments and deepening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Both the leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen the bilateral special strategic and global partnership.
Discussions were also held on education, skill development, tourism, Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), green hydrogen, high technology, semiconductors and digital public infrastructure. Combating terrorism and reform of the United Nations was also discussed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a productive meeting with the President of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol. During the meeting, both leaders talked about ways to further boost India-South Korea friendship in key developmental sectors.
Both the leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in areas of trade and investment, high technology, IT hardware manufacturing, defense, semiconductor, and culture.
They also discussed India’s G20 presidency and South Korea’s Indo-Pacific strategy. President Yoon Suk Yeol appreciated the Prime Minister’s leadership of the G-20 and conveyed his support.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh. The two leaders noted the steady progress achieved in bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
They agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and deepen bilateral trade and investment ties. Modi and Chinh discussed opportunities in the fields of defence, building resilient supply chains, energy, science and technology, human resource development, culture and people-to-people ties.
The Prime Minister met Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz in Hiroshima on the sidelines of G7 summit. The leaders reviewed and positively assessed the progress in bilateral relations. They also exchanged views on regional developments and global challenges. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with the leaders of France and Ukraine today.
Earlier, as a symbol of friendship and goodwill, the Prime Minister also unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima. After unveiling the bust, Modi said, even today, the world gets frightened when they listen to the word Hiroshima. He said, the world is suffering from climate change and terrorism today.
A QUAD Leaders Meeting is also scheduled later in the day with leaders of all QUAD nations. The G7 Summit has chosen several key priorities for the current Presidency.
The broad terms of the G7 Summit preferences include nuclear disarmament, economic resilience and security, regional issues, climate and energy, food and health and development.
There are other priorities also such as digitisation and science and technology which will be highlighted during several sessions at the Summit. Japan has also invited Australia, Brazil, Comoros, Cook Islands, Indonesia, South Korea, and Vietnam and some of the international organisations including the UN.
Akashvani correspondent reports that India has attended nine G7 Summit Outreach sessions till date. India’s regular participation at the G7 Summits clearly points to increasing recognition that India should be a part of any serious effort to resolve global challenges, including those of peace, security, development and environment preservation.
It is to be noted that the Partner countries at the G7 Summit this year include Brazil and Indonesia, which together with India make the outgoing and incoming G20 troika countries.
