    SMVDU Scholar bag prestigious laurel for state

    Jammu: SonaliVerma of Biotechnology, SMVDU brought laurel to University as she won Third prize in “Best Oral presentation” and a cash prize of five thousand Rupees at “The Silver Jubilee conference of Association of Gynecologic Oncologists of India” at Leela Ambience Gurgaon, India from 2nd Dec to 4th Dec 2016. She is Pursuing Ph.D. in Biotechnology under the supervision of Dr.Rakesh Kumar Assistant Professor and Co-supervision of HoD Biotechnology Professor VijeshwarVerma, from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU). The presented study, “Genetic analysis of OGG (rs1052133) in Ovarian Cancer females from Jammu and Kashmir region” the study has been carried out in collaboration with Dr.AjayWakhloo and Dr.DeepakAbrol, of SMGS and GMC Jammu. National and international delegates attended the Conference. The study indicates a genetic polymorphism in a DNA repair gene OGG1 is found to decrease the risk of developing Ovarian Cancer, in females of Jammu and Kashmir region.

    According to Dr. Rakesh from SMVDU, more work needs to follow the preliminary results and the findings can act as biomarkers for ovarian tumors patients in future. It is worth mentioning that this could happen only because of the research MoU signed between the two institutes. Dr Vishal R Tandon Associate Professor, GMC Jammu and Dr Rakesh from SMVDU are principal Coordinators for any Joint research and academic activity between two institutions as per the MoU. Principal/Dean of GMC Jammu Dr Zahid Gilani and honorable vice chancellor of SMVDU Dr. Sanjeev Jain congratulated the team for bagging the award and bringing the laurels to state.

    Honrable VC of SMVDU Dr. Sanjeev Jain has been laying stress on collaborative work and encouraging the faculty for it from day one he joined the University. He laid emphasis on such studies and reiterated that these studies are commendable for their international standards and the highlight being the collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians which will go a long way in patient care and data generation from Jammu and Kashmir. Dr Rahul Sharma and Dr Deepak Abrol were of the opinion that XRCC1 GENE Polymorphisms can be the answer to Million dollar Question why some people get cancer and some don’t.
