UN says no evidence that its observers were targeted along LoC

New Delhi, May 25, Agencies: After Pakistan claimed that United Nations Military Observers group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) narrowly escaped a firing incident as Indian troops targeted their vehicle while they were visiting the areas along the Pakistani side of Line of Control (LoC), UN has dismissed the claim.

There was “no evidence” of them being targeted, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, a media report claimed.

“I can say to you that this afternoon in Bhimber District, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, UNMOGIP military observers accompanied by Pakistani Army escorts heard gunshots in their vicinity. There is no evidence that the UNMOGIP military observers were targeted by the gunfire. No UN military observer was injured,” the report said.

On Tuesday A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) claimed that “Indian troops committed unprovoked ceasefire violation.” The Indian troops deployed on LoC, “targeted UNMOGIP vehicle along LOC in Khanjar sector,” it added.

According to the details shared by the military’s media wing, the vehicle was carrying UNMOGIP Officers Major Emmanual of Philippine and Major Mirko of Croatia when it came under fire.

ISPR further said that the officials, who were on a visit to LOC, were targeted despite UNMOGIP blue flag was hoisted on the vehicle as per procedure.

Both officers remained safe and were rushed back to a safe location, the statement added.

Tensions are simmering along LoC and both countries are engaged in highlighting their attacks on each other’s posts. Earlier India released videos, claiming that Pakistani bankers were damaged in strong retaliation. Later Pakistan also released video with claim that Indian posts were destroyed. Pakistan also claimed there fighter jets flied over Siachen Glacier on Indian side but India rubbished the claim. (CNS)
